Films For Thought Announces Fall/Winter Lineup

Stephen Vance, Staff

For the past four years, Transition Meaford, in partnership with Meaford Hall, has been showing thought-provoking and socially relevant documentary films in the Meaford Hall opera house.

Films shown by Films For Thought organizers over the past four years have focused on environmental and social issues, and the titles announced this week for the coming fall and winter months continue that tradition.

Here are the films that will be part of the fall/winter Films For Thought program:

September 25, 2016:

He Named Me Malala (1hr 28 min): A look at the events leading up to the Taliban’s attack on Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai, for speaking out on girls’ education, followed by the aftermath, including her speech to the United Nations.

October 30, 2016:

Utopia (112 min): John Pilger’s epic portrayal of Earth’s oldest continuous human culture, Aboriginal Australians, and his investigation into Australia’s suppressed colonial past and rapacious present.

November 27, 2016:

The True Cost (92 min): Groundbreaking investigation of fast fashion reveals that, while the price of clothing has been decreasing for decades, the human and environmental costs have grown dramatically.

January 29, 2017:

All the Time In The World (1hr 27 min): In search of a new perspective, a family of five leave the comforts of home to live in the remote Yukon wilderness during the long northern winter and amidst the surprises that the rawness of nature provides. The parents leave their jobs and take their three children, ages 10, 8, and 4, to spend nine months living in a small cabin with no road access, no electricity, no running water, and no internet, no TV, no phone and, most importantly, no clocks or watches.

February 26, 2017: Detropia (58 min)
A vivid portrait of Detroit, America’s first major post-industrial city, as it struggles to deal with the consequences of a broken economic system.

The cost for attending Films For Thought documentary presentations is just $7 for adults and $2 for students. All films start at 1:00 pm. Tickets may be purchased from the Meaford Hall (meafordhall.ca) box office at 12 Nelson Street.
