Man Charged With Arson After Hay Bales Set Ablaze

opp logo270On August 14, at approximately 3:07 p.m., Grey County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) together with the Inter-Township Fire Department responded to a report of a large fire on the south side of Hwy. 26 just north of 28th Avenue E. in the Municipality of Meaford.

The investigation revealed that a hay bale had been set on fire.  A male was observed leaving the area on foot.  Grey County OPP located the suspect male on Grey Rd. 15 in Annan a short time later.

Police arrested the 67 year old Owen Sound man, and charged him with arson.

A bail hearing was scheduled for August 15, 2016.  A video bail hearing is scheduled for August 16, 2016.

The fire destroyed approximately 230 hay bales.  The loss was estimated at $16,500.

There were no injuries reported.

Hwy. 26 between 28th Avenue and Grey Rd. 11 was closed for several hours (8) for emergency crews.
