Grey County Historical Society to Meet in Eugenia

Staff

The Grey County Historical Society will meet in Eugenia on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 1:30 pm, to hear about the Eugenia power generating station, which will celebrate its 100 year anniversary in 2015. The guest speaker will be Barbara Pearn, a Eugenia resident who is very knowledgeable about this unique hydro-electric facility.

The first electrical generator was built at Eugenia in 1895 producing enough electricity to meet the needs of Eugenia and Flesherton. Eventually a group of local businessmen devised a plan to create a dam and reservoir to overcome the seasonal variation in the flow of the Beaver River. In 1914, the Ontario Hydro-Electric Power Commission went ahead with the project, creating a 490-acre reservoir now known as Lake Eugenia. By 1920 the power plant was producing 4500 kW of electricity. Barbara Pearn will tell us more about the history of this unique hydro-electric generating station.

The meeting will take place at the Eugenia Falls Conservation Area. Take Grey Rd. 13 to Eugenia, if going north turn left on to Pellisier Rd., down the hill to Conservation Area. The pavilion is about 300 ft. to the left. The meeting is open to anyone interested in the history of Grey County.
