The annual Terry Fox Run was held across the country on Sunday September 20, and this year was a celebration of 35 years for the event.
Meaford’s run attracted 68 runners and walkers who raised nearly $7,000 for the cause.
Meaford raised $6876.00! Not bad for the organizer being in Thunder Bay at school!
Returning as the event coordinator this year was Haley Ellis, who has been pulling double duty leading up to this year’s race, as she also started her first year of university this month, so her mother Nancy stepped in to assist on the day of the event.
“The Terry Fox run was definitely a slower day than we had hoped for, but it’s the end of the season, and people are just tired of the endless giving and fundraising,” explained Nancy Ellis. “We still managed 68 participants, up a few from last year, and the total raised was$6876.”
In what he says will be his last bicycle ride between Meaford and Collingwood on Terry Fox Run day, Meaford’s Hugh Timmerman raised$2,500. The 84 year-old has put more than 40,000 kilometres on his bicycle over the last 15 years, with nearly all of those kilometres pedalled on the Georgian Trail between Meaford and Collingwood, including his annual Terry Fox rides from which he has raised several thousand dollars over the years.
For those who attended the event at the Rotary Harbour Pavilion, there was also a silent auction table, hot dogs courtesy of Bill’s Valu-mart, water from Muxlow’s and apples from Barrett’s orchards.
