An Owen Sound man discovered over the weekend just how costly excessive speed can be on Ontario Roads.
Grey County OPP have reported that on the evening of Sunday September 8, an officer observed a 1996 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 travelling at a fast rate of speed eastbound on Grey Road 18 east of Rockford, in the Municipality of Meaford.
“The cruiser’s radar was activated and the Camaro registered a speed of 158 km/hr. The posted speed limit is 80 km/hr,” said the OPP in a press release.
The 31 year old Owen Sound man was issued a summons for racing a motor vehicle under the Highway Traffic Act. He was also charged with failing to surrender a valid insurance card under the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act.
The man’s vehicle was impounded and his driver’s licence suspended for seven days.
Penalties for driving in excess of 50 kilometres per hour over posted speed limits in Ontario carry stiff penalties including an immediate seven day licence suspension, a seven day vehicle impounding. Upon conviction drivers accumulate six demerit points, up to six months imprisonment, and are subject to a minimum fine of $2,000, and a maximum fine of $10,000.
Drivers caught a second time can face a licence suspension up to 10 years.
