Reader Not Accepting Surplus Explanations

Letter to the Editor

Editor,

We read the article online (March 11th) about the “Problem for Council: What to do With A Larger than Expected Surplus?” and then we read the excuses.

They were excuses because there can be no other rationales or explanations that are acceptable. To deny “that the surplus was not a result of over-taxing Meaford residents” is beyond belief.

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it must be a duck.

If I sent my six-year old grandson to buy something for seventy cents and gave him a loonie, he would know what to do with the surplus. Give it back! Why can’t the collective minds of Council and management figure out what the right thing is to do?

Simple math says that almost one million dollars surplus divided by some 6,000 taxpayers means we were overcharged by about $170.00 on average per taxpayer. Give it back through the April tax bill!

As our children and grandchildren know, trust is not something given: it is earned. This is an election year. We don’t want to be overtaxed even worse in 2015.

Sincerely,

Ian Fife, Meaford
