metzger provincial champ

How does a teenage competitive skier rebound after a disappointing showing at the Canada Winter Games last month? She heads for Thunder Bay for the Provincial Ski Racing Championships and returns home a champion.

Grade 10 GBSS student Camryn Metzger stormed back into form in Thunder Bay winning both the Slalom and Giant Slalom titles, as well as the U16 Overall Provincial Championship based on her total points from the Slalom, GS, and Super G races.

Her performance at the Provincial Championships has earned her a trip to Stowe, Vermont, to compete in the Can AM races which take place from March 22 to 24. The Can AM races bring together the top ski racers from Ontario, Quebec, the Maritimes, and the eastern and central USA.

I made it to the Can AM races a couple of years ago, so getting back there and doing what I do will be good,” Metzger told The Independent, who missed most of last year's race season due to injury.

The young ski racer had some local company on the championship podium in Thunder Bay with Will‎ Kornya, who also trains at Georgian Peaks finding similar success.

Metzger said that a strong performance at Stowe, and later at the international competition, the Whistler Cup, could land her a spot on Team Canada.
