Reader Critical of Progressive View

Editor,

Recent TMI editorial about fewer windows on Sykes Street to decorate became a promo to shop locally then descended into a screed about how wonderful things would be if gas prices were $3 per litre. Do progressives ever consider the unintended consequences of policies that they embrace like religion? They seldom connect the dots or they would be able to answer many of the questions posed.

We are told endlessly that Meaford Hall would transform the economy of main street Meaford.

Perhaps a lot of businesses fail because of high taxes and red tape.

New Meaford Resident Agrees With Thinking Outside the Box

Editor,

I enjoyed your article on thinking outside the box. My wife and I just moved to Meaford, purchasing a house in the downtown area.

When I was the general manager of Dunnville Hydro, there were a lot of issues to deal with in which people said it can’t be done. I finally put a saying up on the wall in the lunchroom – “Would those of you who are saying it can’t be done stop interrupting those of us who are doing it.”

Currently, I am the president of Orangeville Hydro. When our local police force had run out of space they were using our boardroom and lunchroom as meeting places. The police needed a new building but the cost was pretty steep. I suggested to the Town Council that they add on to our building and we share some services. Eventually that was the decision and the Town saved $600,000 in construction costs in part due to deep servicing. We also now share the cost of grass cutting and snow maintenance.

Kudos for your suggestion.

Thanks,

George Dick, Meaford

Newly Elected Councillor: We Can No Longer Place Blame on the Past

Editor,

Thank you to the 1765 people who agreed with my wife Kim. Your support, assistance and encouraging words were and will be the driving force as I serve you on council. While it is apparent that taxpayers are concerned about spending and roads, I need clear and collaborative ways to address these issues.

One comment in the Meaford Independent, I have to clear up. After Metro bought A&P it was clear they were not interested in Franchise operations. After negotiating a buy out with 75 Franchises, Kim and I sold our business to Metro in 2008.I was retained as store manager.

I am humbled and honoured to be among the team the voters have chosen. Citizens should know the 20 candidates vying for 7 seats became friends. Our campaign was respectful, cooperative and genuine. The betterment of our municipality and its citizens were at the top of everyone’s priority list. I commend these people for their genuine passion, energy and willingness to sacrifice their free time to serve their fellow Canadians. We would all be well served by a council of these 20 diverse people. I am looking forward to their continued connection and support.
