Reader Has Many Questions About Policing Issue

Mr. Editor,

I would like to commend Mr. Long for his comments regarding the strange happenings which were initiated recently by some of our senior administration.

He stated so well what has puzzled many of our citizens.  Why is it that the administrators can come up with figures to prove that their pet project (going with OSPS) is to be our salvation when we are still waiting for the OPP estimates and the Consultants’ reports?

Who hired the Consultants? Why is it that these employees have such missionary zeal when promoting this rather nebulous proposal from our neighbour? Where is the evidence that they have the same desire to cut costs in other ways?  What’s motivating them to push the limits when dealing with our elected representatives? Do our elected representatives even realize that the limits are being pushed?  Does anyone who has been around here for any length of time remember Owen Sound reaching out to surrounding communities, offering to provide a service for a fraction of the cost of providing the same service to their own taxpayers?

Reader Proud of Meaford's Stance on Nuclear Waste

Editor,

Meaford joins Blue Mountains on Nuclear Wastes. Last month July 28, the Municipality of Meaford passed a Resolution NOT TO SUPPORT the Deep Geological Repository (DGR) for (low and intermediate level nuclear wastes). The plan by Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is to bury nuclear wastes 560 metres deep and 1.2 km from Lake Huron, a source of fresh water for more than 40 million people living around the Great Lakes in Canada and the United States.

Before my deputation to Meaford council, I have submitted many documents about nuclear wastes in Canada and around the world. What was disturbing were two recent discoveries- First, was Mr. frank Greeningl letter to the Joint Review Panel (JRP) chaired by Ms. Stella Swanson. Mr. Greening with a PhD in chemistry worked for Ontario Hydro and Ontario Power Generation (OPG) for more than 30 years as their Chemist. He stated that the inventory of nuclear wastes were significantly underestimated.

Reader Not Impressed With Quick Municipal Response to New OPP Pricing

Editor,

An interesting article appeared in The Meaford Independent on August 18 written by Stephen Vance entitled “Municipality Has First Look at New OPP Billing Model”. It reports that Darcy Chapman, treasurer of Meaford, released a statement to the news media on Friday 15 August after apparently receiving information on Thursday 14 August concerning a proposed new billing model from the OPP.

The facts reported may or may not be accurate and Mr. Chapman's figures are certainly questionable and open to interpretation but I would like to commend, in fact praise, the speed and commitment of staff members in receiving, assimilating, digesting, preparing and distributing their interpretation of this alleged OPP report. All in less than 36 hours!
