This is an open letter to the residents of Meaford. As we all know the Royal Canadian Legion has long been recognized as the keepers of Remembrance in this country. The Global pandemic notwithstanding, this is still the case.
The Meaford branch of the Legion#32 has been discussing how we can accomplish the task of continuing our tradition of paying homage to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice to maintain our way of life. As has been quoted at the National Level, “the importance of a live ceremony honouring our Veterans and their sacrifices is considered paramount by the Legion, especially during the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.” This being said, the following has been decided to accomplish the aforementioned homage that they so richly deserve.
For the first time, spectators will be discouraged from attending in person, due to the limited space and requirement to physical distance. The smaller number of people participating will be required to remain two metres apart and will need to wear masks unless performing certain duties related to the ceremony.
Anticipated significant changes to this year's commemoration include:
No Veteran’s parade
No Canadian Armed Forces parade
A reduced colour party
Wreaths will be pre-positioned such that no wreath bearers or assistants will be required
No members of the Cadets or Junior Rangers present
There will be no comradeship at the arena following the service.
These changes for the 2020 Remembrance Day services are very difficult for us as Legionnaires, as we endeavour to have as many folks to join us each year at the Cenotaph. Hopefully,we can return to our traditional ceremony next year. We hope that you as proud Canadians can find a way to hold your own way to pay tribute to our fallen. At the very least to hold them in your hearts and observe a two minute silence at 11 a.m.
Further information on obtaining a wreath can be obtained from our Poppy Chairman, Marty Riordan (519-538-2809). Please let us know as soon as possible.
