We Can Blame Ourselves For Property Tax Increases

MeBWmediaThe more I think about it, the more I think that Meaford Mayor Francis Richardson might be right.

When asked during a recent public budget presentation meeting at Meaford Hall if he was disappointed with the low public turnout for such an important meeting, the Mayor said he wasn't disappointed at all, and in fact the Mayor said, he took it as a sign that Meaford residents were happy with the decisions being made by he and his council.

In Search of False Information

MeBWmediaWe've been very concerned at The Meaford Independent about a comment made by Councillor Deborah Young at the October 24 meeting of council. Concerned because we care.

At that meeting, Councillor Young stated that false information had been given to the public about the proposed waste-to-energy facility that was being considered by council.

Councillor Young did not provide any details as to what false information had been passed along to the public, or who provided the false information.

We Pay Their Salaries - So What?

MeBWmediaI received an email late last week from a reader who had plenty of nasty things to say about our members of council and our CAO.
As you can imagine, I get plenty of these messages from Meaford residents who are angry about everything from stray cats, to pot-holes, to concerns about municipal expenditures.

This particular email was peppered with expletives, and clearly the author was unhappy with what they considered to be less than stellar performance by our council and CAO.

Council Should Not Investigate Themselves

MeBWmediaI can't say that I was overly surprised as I watched Meaford's council decide to do away with a bylaw that has been on the books since 2007 which requires the municipality to appoint an integrity commissioner to investigate complaints lodged against members of council.

After all, we haven't had an integrity commissioner in more than three years in this municipality, so council has essentially been violating their own bylaw. I'm surprised they didn't rescind the bylaw long ago.
