2017 GBCS fooddrive 540

With some delivery assistance from the Meaford Fire Department, students at Georgian Bay Community School (GBCS) completed their annual Five Days of Caring food drive on December 11, with a special delivery to Meaford's Golden Town Outreach (GTO) food bank.

This year marked the 11th year of the initiative which is organized by the GBCS 'Me to We' group.

For one week students at GBCS collected non-perishable food items. To add some fun to the initiative, classes were awarded points for each item collected. The class with the most points at the end of the week won donuts provided by Tim Horton's Meaford.

More than 600 items were collected by the students this year, and nearly 10,000 items have been collected and donated in the 11 years of the initiative. The winning class was Mr. Kearns's Grade 9/10 Business class with 184 items and 4,680 points. The Wildcard winner was Ms. Almond's art class.

On delivery day the students loaded the food items into the waiting fire trucks, after which they walked to the GTO food bank to help unload.

We filled the fire truck with the help of Meaford firefighters Rob Pilon and Mike French and delivered all of the food to the Golden Town Outreach to help fill the Christmas hampers,” GBCS teacher Amy Teed-Acres told The Independent.
